The weather here in Victoria was absolutely SPECTACULAR on race morning! It was warm but not crazy hot. Mind you, any warmer and I would not have been a happy camper.
The plan was to run the race with my training buddy, Sandy. We weren't racing this one, it was all about having a good time and finishing in one piece. This is definitely unusual for me, but I didn't have quite enough time to train properly after the late winter bout of pneumonia, so that's why the self-imposed race ban.
We ran together for about 5k (can't quite remember now). But Sandy was having troubles finding her running groove and when she gets like that she much prefers to run by herself. I totally GET that ... so off I went (after plugging in my music, of course).
I don't remember a whole lot about the race other than there were lots of hills (both down and up). I'm still one of the slowest uphill runners EVER, but baby, watch out coming down the other side. Everyone who passes me going up gets their butt kicked on the way down. I don't understand why runners don't gun it downhill. I know you have to be careful about not over-striding, but once that's under control, my motto is "Go for it!".
One gel, 20 oz. of grapefruit flavoured sports drink, and lots of tunes later I finally crossed the finish line.
No personal bests for me time-wise, but it was super fun and really, that's all that counts :)
Coming into the finish line.
You know, I remember when this was taken and I distinctly remember feeling much faster than I look.
It was fun, but I'm sure glad it's over!
Finally found Sandy!
A huge shout-out to my friend, Michelle. She ran her first ever 5k and her posse dressed up in pink tutus. What a hoot! Michelle is the one in sunglasses.
11 more days of teaching then I'm on summer holidays. Yee haw!
